What is Mjlonir?

Mjlonir is a beer brand I created to encompass my fascination with Norse mythology and a popular drink consumed by many. The design is a deliberate dichotomy that uses a classic celtic aesthetic. It harks back to the ‘ancient’ days of civilised drinking; but also uses symbolism to poke fun at indulging in its excesses.

Keeping in the theme of 13th century iconography, I used 3 viking-inspired mascots to represent the 3 beers in the range. Each one was designed with a similar feel–ancient symbols of the most famous Asgardian gods with a modern twist.

I also developed further promotional POS material using variations of the can graphics to extend the reach of the brand.

Design Process

I began by wireframing the layout and copy for Desktop. This helped me determine the user flow and refine it before I added the visuals. I then applied branding, photography, and final copy. As for art direction, I chose a clean and direct approach. The colour palette is extremely simple, bordering on monochromatic, aside from the accent colour.

Beer Design

I decided to brand the different types of beer based off of the three most famous Norse gods: Loki, Thor and Odin. I aimed for a simple, yet traditional design using bold strokes and a viking rune pattern in the background.
